Replacing Sewer Drain Line from House to Street-Including What it Cost

Real Estate Investing Unmasked

I manage a property in Orange County, California. The tenant was complaining that water was not only not draining, it was flowing into her front yard. At first, we ordered someone to hydro jet the line to clear the drain from tree roots, etc. The plumbing company told me that we needed to do more than just hydro jet the line. Part of the clay piping had cracked and was starting to collapse. This meant the line needed to be repaired/replaced.

There are a couple methods for changing a sewer drain. You can reline a pipe, which leaves a very small lining to prevent roots from entering the pipe again; however, what we found was more effective was inserting a sleeve that we then filled with epoxy, forming a brand new, thick drain pipe. The people we chose to go with arranged for the permit and we made sure the card was visible so the inspector could sign off. All in all, it was a very easy process. In total, it cost $7,250 for approx. 65 feet of piping.
