Please visit us at: http://botanyboy.org/ Each fall right at the time of the equinox splashes of brilliant crimson appear along the roadsides and rice patties of southern Japan. These are the flowers of the red spider lily, Lycoris radiata. It is called the red spider lily or surprise lily in the west due to its spidery red flowers, and the fact that the leaves are dormant during flowering. It is associated with the spirits of the dead in Japanese culture, and is called higanbana in Japan. In this video see it growing along small rivers and on the edge of rice patties with a near relative, L. x albiflora.
