Recovery efforts suspended at collapsed bridge in Baltimore after two bodies found

Recovery efforts have been suspended in Baltimore, Maryland after the bodies of two missing construction workers were found in the water.

The pair, along with four others, were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge Tuesday when a shipping vessel lost power, and hit a support beam, collapsing the bridge.

Investigators say they're moving to a "salvage operation" now, as it's become too difficult for divers to maneuver around debris and concrete from the bridge in the water.

The other four people missing are presumed dead. Everyone on the bridge was construction workers doing pothole repairs at the time of the collapse.

The ship's black box was retrieved on Wednesday, and the National Transportation Safety Board has learned alarms went off 45 minutes after the ship left the terminal.

They say a full investigation could take up to two years.

The NTSB also says at least 56 containers on board were carrying hazardous materials, some of which have been breached.

At this point, the state is focusing on rebuilding and is asking the U.S. Congress for $60million to do so.

“The collapse of the Key Bridge is not just a Maryland crisis. The collapse of the key bridge is a global crisis,” says Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore, “the national economy and the world's economy depend on the port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country. Last year alone, the port handled $80 billion of foreign cargo, the largest in the country.”

It is currently unclear how long it will take to get the port back up and running and the U.S. Secretary of Transport says it will be a long and costly process.

Meanwhile, dozens of ships already en route to Baltimore are being diverted to ports in New York and elsewhere in the country.
