The 1984 presidential election cycle featured incumbent President Ronald Reagan, a Republican, and former Vice President Walter Mondale, the Democratic nominee. The second debate was a 90minute discussion focusing on defense and foreign policy. Moderated by Edwin Newman, formerly of NBC, with questions posed by a panel of journalists, it took place on October 21, 1984, in Kansas City, Kansas.
