Raising an Adventure Cat: How to Backpack Train Your Cat

Follow
King Curtis the Cat

In Raising an Adventure Cat, I share tips and advice for how I raised King Curtis from a timid kitten into a brave adventure cat. In this second video of the series, I answer the question I am most often asked: "How did you get your cat used to being carried around in a backpack?" Like anything with cats, it just takes time, patience, and a lot of treats!

King Curtis started using a backpack when he was 3 years old, after we moved to San Francisco. We wanted an easier and safer way to take him around the city, to and from parks, and other sites. Prior to this, we used similar techniques to "crate train" King Curtis so that he wouldn't be afraid of his cat carrier. But once we switched to the backpack, we have never gone back! Every cat is different, so it is important to respect your cat's special needs. Try encouraging and engaging your cat a few minutes every day until they are comfortable.

King Curtis is around 15 pounds, so there were fewer cat backpack options, since most have a 10 pound weight capacity. It is important to keep your cat's weight or, if it's a kitten, it's estimated adult weight in mind when you are shopping.
