Screech Owls are cavity nesters, nesting in hollow trees in holes that have been carved by other birds like woodpeckers. But you can build a nest box designed for screech owls, or buy one from your local Wild Bird Center. This group of dead pines has a bunch of cavities, so we thought we might try hanging a nearby owl nest box. We were afraid we were late in the season to hang this box, but within two weeks we were delighted to find a screech owl checking it out. The owl came and went several times in the night, and we were so excited to see it return. Most of the day, the owl stayed hidden in the box, but occasionally it peeked out like this one. On the second night, a second owl spent some time in the box and you can hear them vocalizing.We can’t wait to see what happens next!
