Punta del Este is a peninsular city located at the southern tip of Uruguay, in the Maldonado department, 5 km away from the capital city of the same name. It is one of the most exclusive resorts in Latin America and the most important in Uruguay, the second largest tourist destination in the country behind Montevideo. It is located on a narrow strip of land that conventionally separates the Río de la Plata from the Atlantic Ocean, although both shores are bathed by marine waters. The city has been referred to as "The Monaco of the South," "The Pearl of the Atlantic," "The Hamptons of South America," "The Miami Beach of South America," and "The St. Tropez of South America."
