A United States Patent only enables you to prevent making, using and selling your patented invention within the boundaries of the United States. It also enables you to prevent importation. However, a United States Patent has no authority to prevent making, using and selling of your invention in other countries.

You need to have a patent granted in any specific country in which you want to protect your invention!

This is where foreign filing comes into play! The United States is a member of international treaties (Paris Convention, Patent Cooperation Treaty, among others) that allow U.S. Citizens to gain the benefit of their earliest filing date (priority date) in the patent offices of other signatory countries.
