How to properly service the shaft final drive on your BMW R1200GS

The generally accepted advantage of having a shaft drive bike like the R1200GS Bmw is that it’s maintenance free. Well that’s not necessarily true, as the final drive of a GS has to be serviced if you want it to function properly and be reliable. The GS, like a car, has a tail shaft with universal joints that connect the gearbox to the final drive.
Unfortunately, where the tail shaft connects at either end, it is exposed to the elements, particularly at the final drive end.
If it isn’t lubed correctly, it will rust and seize to the spline of the diff, which is exactly what’s happened to this bike.
That’s why we made this video, to show you how to do it yourself.

TOOLS
You will need a small range of tools including T30 to T55 drivers, a tension wrench, water proof grease, and GL5 rated final drive gear oil.
