Portable Air Conditioner in RV 1 Year Review

Gimpy Camper

Hey guys, It's Barratt with the Gimpy Camper. A lot of people ask about how the portable air conditioner is working out in my camper. I've been more than happy with it, so we will go over a couple changes I've made and how it's going, coming up after this...

So the Serene Life Portable Airconditioner has been working great. I've heard a lot of people saying that the single ducted units don't work at all. I'm going to say that this air conditioner does make a big difference. I'm going to run a test with this single air conditioner in my RV without my rooftop a/c and tell you what happens temperaturewise. I can already tell you that it is an amazing difference. Now, remember that we do have the single duct insulated which I believe helps a lot. Also, remember that we added a 15 amp power inlet because we generally just use 30 amp service. This has worked great and we have had a good second a/c or heat without affecting our 30 amp power draw. We will do the temerature test at the end of this video, but for those that want to go straight there, I'm going to time stamp it right here to show you where it is if you want to jump to it. *****time stamp

What are some things that haven't worked out as well as I had liked? The first time I used this system we were at Honeysuckle Meadows in Pigeon Forge in winter and it was pretty cold. Now if you will remember, the biggest problem that I had when installing the unit was that the vent adapter didn't fit into the window. Now, the fix for me was to get some thin plywood and screw it to the screen of the window and use as an adapter. This has worked great, I was afraid it would come loose when traveling down the road and didn't, but the one problem was initial on that first trip to Pigeon Forge, you could feel the cold air from outside just coming straight through the plywood. I added a piece of reflectix on the outside of the plywood and it made a huge difference. I've not had any issues with it since then. The only problem that I have had out of the actual unit is that occasionally it needs to be drained. I had initially thought I would use it as a dehumidifier as well, but the truth is the internal tank is very small and every time I have tried to drain it I have spilled water on the floor. So I started lifting the whole thing on the kitchen counter to empty it when needed. I had put the drain hose on it with and elbow and a plug thinking that it would be easier to drain, but it leaked, so I removed the hose. I believe I read somewhere that the unit is supposed to disperse a lot of the moisture in the air and out of the vent hose, but I don't actually see anything about that now. I would say it's only about once every other month using it on a 3day weekend trip about every other week that I have to empty it.

Everything else has been great with the unit, but when I was researching making this video and thinking about recently cleaning the coils, and when I was looking at the air conditioner on Amazon, it said there was a cleanable filter, which I hadn't thought of, but I have never cleaned it. I'm not sure if there is an indicator light like the one on the window unit in my house, but I figure it's time to figure out how to clean it it now... So let's get started.

So there you have it. It's working great, and I'll continue to use this in the winter and summer for as long as I can see.
