TRAINING YOUR PUPPY FOR GROOMING

The breeder will normally have started the grooming process with your puppy to help desensitise them to the feel and the sound of the equipment used but it's very important to continue the training when your puppy arrives home.

Be sure to BE CONSISTENT, start to groom your puppy in the same place every time you groom him, this will help communicate with your puppy what you are about to do. Start with the same area every time you groom your puppy, for example begin the grooming on your puppy's back and the work your way through his body, then legs and head last including their ears.

Your puppy may complain about being groomed for the first time but be patient! Training and conditioning your puppy for the grooming process is so important as this is the time your puppy is going to remember how he feels, so try and create positive experiences for him.

Lots of treats and rewards, remember to reward the good behaviour, and groom for small amounts to start with, 5 minutes per day and then work up from there and you should be able to groom your entire dog in one sitting. Let him look at the grooming tools and let him smell them. For his first grooming session, gently stroke him with his slicker brush and comb.

We recommend your puppy's first visit to the groomer should a be a bath, dry and brush first,
then the next visit and light tidy and then a full groom, this may differ due to the breed of puppy.
