Constructing a 3string riff building exercise is not any kind of difficult challenge when you consider the overall simplicity behind your options.

The three strings of your riffs simply need to be arranged in groups that function well with the key. Once you establish a key signature, you’ll have the exact notes needed to build the best possible riff phrases. That said, I’m going to deliver everything you’ll require to achieve it all in this lesson.

If you want to try creating your own riff builder routine and you are new to this type of training, then focus on the same 3 strings until everything makes sense. If you instead, have a good understanding of the notes on the neck and you want to adopt a more rigorous 3string riff builder routine, then you should work on riffs that apply different bass notes in an alternating fashion.

Before getting started, lay out the chosen key’s notes in relationship to the low open string. Your riff building routine should split strings to allow you to train the notes on upper strings and utilize bass notes as to compound the exercise.

Riff building with 3note exercises will increase note knowledge at a faster pace and it helps to coordinate multiple string groups into one melody & chord action. It helps riffs sound musically pleasing and become more technically functional.
