Picking up back feet with rope

Follow
Rising A Equine

I always forget to mention things after the fact. One being is that I teach a horse to move their hips away from me well in groundwork before I ever pick up their back feet, with rope or not, and either use this method or at least keep a short lead and flex their nose into me when starting to slim the chances down of getting kicked. Another is that you can use a softer rope such as a lead rope with a half hitch or tied like a lariat, which I usually do to prevent burns to the horse. If you are not dallied to a saddle horse, or do not have the method down to avoid rope burns gloves are also an option. The positioning I use on my hip and the distance and angle in relation to the horse makes this easy physically on myself, even if the horse kicks hard. Thanks for watching the process we take for some watchier horses around their back ends when getting started.
