The test will be held at a CSLB testing center. There are several throughout the state of California. If you are applying from out of state you will need to come to California to take the exam. There are no online exams currently being offered.

Content of the Examination

The Landscaping (C27) Examination is divided
into six major sections:

1. Planning and Estimating (26%)
• Project planning
• Botanical names of plants
• Project estimating

2. Construction Preparation (14%)
• Preconstruction site planning
• Preconstruction site demolition, and, preparation
• Trenching and grading

3. Hardscape Installation (16%)
• Flatwork
• Masonry
• Structures
• Water features

4. Drainage, Irrigation, Lighting, and Plant
Installation (24%)
• Drainage
• Irrigation
• Lighting
• Plant installation

5. Maintenance and Repair (10%)
• Landscape maintenance
• Landscape repair

6. Safety (10%)
• Employee safety
• Job site safety

You will want to make sure that you understand all of the areas of the exam and the different trade concepts that will be required to pass.

California contractor licenses differ from other states in that there is no separation between residential and commercial. Where in other states you will have a separation of residential and commercial work, in California a variety of different trades and specialties fall under the C27 landscaping license.

It is very important to remember that you may be asked to answer questions about tradespecific duties you maybe have never done in the field.
