Part 16 | What is a Split top Roubo Workbench Anyways?

Follow
Starr Woodworks

I've gotten several questions about my bench like "what are bench dogs" or "what's a deadman" during my bench build, so I thought I'd make a more fulllength video showing the primary features of the bench in use.
.

The Split Top Roubo bench plan is based on Andre Roubo's bench from Plate 11 of L' Art du Menuisier. That's a fancy way of saying a bunch dorks like me stared at an old picture of a bench for too long and tried to make it ourselves. It was worth it though. This thing is handy! See below for some details about what I used to make the bench.
.

Wood — Reclaimed pine for the base + ash from @hardwoodstorenc for the bench tops and vise chop.
.
Finish — Blue spruce milk paint from @realmilkpaintco + one top coat of "top oil" from @osmo_usa.
.
Vise Hardware — Leg vise and tail vise from @benchcrafted
.
Plans — From @benchcrafted. They're so detailed!
.
Hold fasts — Made by Gramercy from @toolsforworkingwood.
.
Casters — By Powertech from @homedepot. Note, model 17001 has four screws vs the previous model that had two.
.
Total Cost — $650 for the wood + $761 for the hardware + $125 for the other stuff = $1,536. Well worth it. I'll build you one if you're interested.
