We went to the beach to catch bait for a Keys trip and wound up stumbling on a major surprise! The silverside run is in full swing on Pompano Beach and we tried to use them for live bait but our hooks were simply too big. As soon as we hooked the silversides they died so dead silversides it was. No snook or tarpon were landed but we got into a bite of palometa Trachinotus goodei, a relative of the permit and the pompano that are seldom targeted. We usually catch them on shrimp, sand flees and other shellfish but on this day we learned that palometa LOVE SILVERSIDES!
