This video is not about entertainment. I consider this story to be a public service announcement that may hopefully help someone that takes small boats out on big water. I try to be thorough about the facts, which may appear a little dry at times, but the purpose of this video is to educate and inform.

This started out as a beautiful September morning on Lake St. Clair in Michigan in 2014. I was the coangler in a bass fishing tournament. This means that I was the passenger. I did not own this boat nor did I drive or control the boat. Although things went bad, the owner and driver of the boat, Chris Flint has become a good friend of mine. He is a police officer and has plenty of experience operating bass boats on big water. Chris grew up in upstate New York and has fished big water his whole life. He is a great fisherman, a registered boat captain and knows how to find fish on St Clair. We had a banner day catching 74 smallies. We were fortunate that he knew how to drive the boat and he did a fine job. The circumstances that led to this incident were not his fault. It was definitely a learning experience for us both, because no matter how prepared you think you are, there is always more that could have been done. I remember during some training in the Army that I attended regarding fatal accidents, the instructor mentioned that a disaster can almost always be avoided or prevented if any event in a series or chain of events can be removed. As you hear this story, it is clear that with hindsight we could have removed a link or two in the chain of events that might have prevented this from happening.
