Mobile applications owned or controlled by Chinese companies have been put on notice with the passage of legislation that forces a sale of TikTok within the next year or see it banned.

“Foreign adversaries use technology for social and political control," Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell said shortly before the Senate voted on the bill, which was bundled in a larger foreign aid package earlier this month. “Congress is acting to prevent foreign adversaries from conducting espionage, surveillance, maligned operations.”

The U.S. has entered somewhat uncharted territory by implementing a law that is expected to block Americans from using one of their favorite apps–TikTok said 170 million of them use the platform. However, it's a longstanding practice in China where just about every American platform, including TikTok, is blocked.
