OpenAI's cofounder, Ilya Sutskever, one of the key figures in the saga of Sam Altman's removal and reinstatement, has made the surprising announcement that he will be leaving the Microsoftbacked AI startup.

Sutskever, not only a cofounder but also a prominent scientist, played a poignant role in the controversial proceedings involving the firing and later rehiring of OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, in November 2023. Being on the board of directors that orchestrated Altman’s firing, his subsequent shift to advocate for Altman’s return suggested an intense drama within the company boardroom.

His pivotal role, however, was shortlived. After Altman’s return, Sutskever was promptly removed from the board of directors. Rumours circulating in recent months corroborated this, as Sutskever was reportedly absent from daily company operations.

Sam Altman expressed a sense of loss regarding Sutskever's departure. On record, Altman shared that the news was “very sad” and paid tribute to Sutskever by calling him “one of the greatest minds of our generation”.

With Sutskever's exit, OpenAI has announced research director Jakub Pachocki as the new chief scientist, denoting a new age for the AI startup.
