One Hour: Sea Otter Moms + Pups Grooming Relaxing and Sleeping | Ambient Music | Krill Waves Radio

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Put the world on paws and relax, rest (or even sleep!) to one hour of resident sea otters Selka and Kit grooming and sleeping with rescued sea otter Pups 893 and 901!

This episode of Krill Waves Radio is taking a quick detour from the lofi hip hop to some chilled out ambient tunes—there's about 15 minutes of grooming followed by nearly 40 minutes of sleeping sea otters (Selka and Pup 893 mostly).

This footage was taken while Selka and Kit hosted the rescued pups in our Sea Otter Exhibit. Because of our closure during the pandemic, we've been able to have these young otters in our deeper tank all day for them to practice diving and foraging before returning to the wild. Historically, these sessions would have happened at night when the Aquarium was closed.

We hope this video is good for some mindfulness, meditation (meditocean?) and relaxation as a companion to your day, floating along with some sea otters doing their part to help conserve this critical species—and to just be otterly pawesome all around.

More info:
Our Sea Otter Program pairs our resident sea otters with rescued pups as a part of our pioneering sea otter surrogacy work. Selka and Kit are both experienced adoptive moms, and will teach Pups 893 and 901 how to dive, forage for food and groom their thick fur.

Eventually the pups will be released to the wild—and after more than 30 years of this work, the science shows that these released otters can be key players in restoring the health and resilience of California’s coastal ecosystems:    • Sea Otters in Elkhorn Slough: A Conse...

We want to thank the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for granting us this special exception to our Marine Mammal Enhancement permit, # MA032027 that governs our work with wild sea otters, to allow us to stream our Sea Otter Cam and record this video while these young animals were housed in the exhibit.
