Old Photos of Scotland No.3 - Pubs Inns u0026 Taverns

Ed Explores Scotland

Third in the series Old Photos of Scotland, with photographs of pubs, or public houses, and other drinking establishments, dating from the Victorian period up to fairly recently.

Pubs have long been at the very heart of Scotland's communities, providing rooms in which to socialise and, of course, drink alcohol. Bar counters first made their appearance in the early nineteenth century, and before then beer would have been brought to your table in a jug.

Change of owner in a public house invariably meant some renovation or remodelling of the premises and, on way too many occasions, total destruction of old fixtures and fittings. Many old and architecturally stunning pubs interiors have found their way into the bin.

By examining old photographs we can perhaps get an idea of how pubs used to be, and how they changed with time and changing social trends. It's getting very difficult finding what you might term a traditional public house these days. I hope you enjoy what follows.
