Notarizing for a Teen with a Child ID

Follow
National Notary Association

This reallife case involves one of a Notary’s most important duties: Verifying the identity of signers. While the idea of a teenager having an ID card at a young age may seem strange to some, it’s not impossible.

States do issue IDs to minors. Depending on the state, the ID could be valid for up to 10 years.

Steps to Check a Signer’s Identity:
If a signer looks significantly different from their ID photo, there are a few steps you can take:

1. Compare the information on the ID — such as age and height to the — to the signer.
2. Ask the signer about information on the ID, such as their street address or date of birth.
3. Ask for an alternate ID.

Verifying a signer’s identity is a judgment call. If you follow sound standards of practice and are comfortable that the minor is who they say they are, then you could proceed. If you are not satisfied, you can and should refuse the notarization.
