I have a lot of personal experience with NordVPN and ExpressVPN, after all, I’ve been closely monitoring both for years. But lately, there’ve been so many changes that I have to do an indepth ExpressVPN vs NordVPN 2024 comparison, showing whether these VPNs are still worth using, and why.


Servers, Speed & Performance comparison:


You might already know that having a lot of servers allows VPN providers to spread the load more evenly to avoid slowdowns, while lots of country locations are essential to access more content worldwide. Well, NordVPN just crossed the 6 thousand servers threshold, and ExpressVPN’s last update of 2023 raised its list of available countries to an absolute market record of 105.

Even comparing ExpressVPN vs NordVPN 2023 versions, the latter has at least twice as many servers as ExpressVPN had before hiding its server count. At the same time, ExpressVPN’s country list was upgraded only recently, but the number of servers is still not disclosed. Since servers are closely tied to speed, I’ve run a NordVPN vs ExpressVPN speed test.

Both NordLynx and Lightway were developed with the best performance in mind, and they provided the best results. NordVPN loses almost no speed compared to my baseline, and ExpressVPN is only slightly behind this speed difference is not significant enough to affect your typical browsing.

I can’t say I’ve had any noticeable slowdowns even when streaming, and I’ve tested a lot of foreign locations for this VPN service comparison. Notably, ExpressVPN can access way more content than NordVPN, so even with a bit slower speed, I consider it a more preferable streaming option.


NordVPN vs ExpressVPN privacy comparison: which is safer to use?


Most VPNs often operate under privacyfriendly jurisdictions, so the question stands: is NordVPN or ExpressVPN better in that regard? Both VPNs are based in Panama and British Virgin Islands respectively, locations known for their privacyfocused laws. One thing to point out is that ExpressVPN currently belongs to Kape Technologies, their merger being a huge scandal a few years ago. And while everyone already knows of Kape’s reputation regarding malware, this company is also based in the UK, which is not a privacyfriendly jurisdiction, so it’s a risk factor for ExpressVPN as well.

On the other hand, ExpressVPN doesn’t keep any logs of user activity, this has been confirmed with an independent audit. Plus, ExpressVPN is the first VPN to switch to RAMonly servers, which can’t even record user data in the first place. NordVPN has followed that example, so it also switched to RAMonly servers. NordVPN’s latest nologs policy audit is quite recent too. Talking about privacy, with features like that I can recommend NordVPN and ExpressVPN for torrenting their nologs policy is exactly what you might need to avoid getting into trouble because of torrenting.

Still, due to the questionable leadership of ExpressVPN, I’m trusting NordVPN more, since it doesn’t have any privacy concerns I should be wary of.
