If you live in an old brownstone, or brick building which is common in old cities like Boston, Chicago, or NYC, you probably already know that central Air Conditioning is prohibitively expensive to install. Mini Split heat pump units are a great alternative, as long as your local historical commission does not object to the ugly pipes running down the facade of you building. Here in the South End, the permitting process makes Split mini systems a less attractive option.

So we're left with sweaty summer nights or you can opt for a loud, obtrusive window air conditioner with precarious window mounting. Be sure to buy the additional homeowner's insurance for when your nephew tries to open the window at the July 4th gathering and drops your 12,000 BTU LG window unit 3 stories down onto uncle Paul's 911 Carrera.

There is a 3rd option however and it's my favorite for this situation. Enter the Midea U Shaped Air conditioner. The brilliant design of this incorporates a secure mounting system with excellent insulation from both weather and noise, along with the ability to open the window while maintaining a secure mount. Initial installation from new takes 4060 minutes and uninstalling takes about 10 minutes. Subsequent installations in the same window will only take 1520 minutes.

The noise level and energy consumption are kept in check by separating the external compressor motor and fans from the internal blower motor and fans. This window air conditioner is more similar to the Air conditioning system in Uncle Paul's Porsche than a conventional window A/C.

I've installed around 50 of these Midea U models in the last couple of summers and clients love them. If you have any questions, please leave a comment and I will respond promptly.
