Nightmare DIY Kitchen Extension. Building Our Dream Home by Hand

Restoring Number Four

What do we do when we run out of money for the extension? Dig it by hand of course!

It’s time to start building our extension! We’ll be doing a lot of this one ourselves, starting with digging the foundations by HAND. This week we became the strongest we’ve ever been, learnt how to concrete pour and had some very unwelcome visitors…

Massive thanks to our fab architects at Bespoke Living for our 3D render ideas. If you're on the hunt for the best in the biz, check them out: https://bespokelivingaic.co.uk/

Our Kitchen is a nightmare. But we're going to make it paradise
To get this place up to speed, we gonna need to grind, sweat and even move our sewers. Let's do this. This is was our kitchen. Ok I guess you could say it's a bit rough around the edges, but we've got BIG PLANS to change that.We need to do some major remodelling.

We've got plenty of space to play with, so we essentially will be completing two extensions. One to the rear and a side return, meaning we'll end up with 22.5sqm to play with
this space needs to work hard. We want a kitchen, dining table and a sofa, all in this space. Some may call us greedy, we choose to say ambitious...
So this what we're thinking an island in the middle, a kitchen here and our sofa overlooking this beautiful garden, leaving space for a back bench and dining table with a secret nook on this side

Alternatively we can change this layout so that the kitchen is flooded with light, the dining table has space for chairs all around it and merges with the living area a little more
We're stuck what would you do??

To get this extension off the ground, we've got to tackle some mighty tasks:
1. Dig and pour foundations
2. Remove the party wall
3.Create a slab
4. Throw in some steels
5. Take away the back wall (including the chimney)
6. Rebuilt it all!
8.Insulate the floor
9. Screed and underfloor insulation
7. Add a roof and the skylights

Sounds like a lot, we best get crackin'
Our new foundations need to be 600mm wide and 750mm deep to ensure this new structure ain't going nowhere... a little different to the current footings...

We have three main problems with digging our foundations:
1. No back access
2. Extremely narrow hallway
3. No money

The day is here, the ramps are in and I can hear the reverse sounds of the lorry making their way up the road We have 1 hour to get Xtonnes of concrete from the street, through the hallway, around kitchen and into the garden.
We soon got into the groove of things, Chris on the barrows as I spread the concrete evenly throughout the footings, using a patter to make sure the top was nice and smooth. After 45 gruelling minutes, the concrete was poured, Chris was shattered and it was time to relax...
...Sort of. As soon as the concrete had set, it was time to go again and dig out the slab
reaction shot of looking at the next task
But we're pros at this by now we dug over three days, laid tonnes of hardcore and brought in the WHACKKERRR
A little sprinkling of sand and the damproof membrane lay later, we called our trusty concrete supplier and got to work again
Before starting on the second extension, let's talk steels
to achieve the look we're going for, this house is becoming bionic. There are 3 steels going across the back, two along the side, another under the stairs and a mahoosive column holding the whole thing up

For this, we're pulling down the party wall and rebuilding it as a cavity. We got cracking with the sledgehammer and became very close with our neighbours
We found a sewer pipe that shouldn't have been there running through the foundations so with a bit of digging and learning on the job, we moved it out way for now.

We finally have finished the last of the digging and concrete pours and it's time to see some major progress.

Subscribe and join us next week to find out if we manage to beat the clock and get these steels installed in time, watch some walls come crashing down, and finally discover what on earth has happened to our little furry friends...
