Restoring a $2 garage sale vintage rust bucket of an axe and my grandfather's hewing hatchet starting with removing rust, removing the old handle, designing and carving a new wood handle, then going into the sharpening process. How to sharpen an axe with limited tools and skills? No problem, we've got a sharpening on a budget kit for you. I go through the whole sharpening process with no power tools needed, grinding back behind the pitting, flattening the back of the blade, then grinding the bevel of the axe using a file. The blade is sharpened with a series of paddles we can make ourselves from wetdry sandpaper cutoffs from an automotive shop. Then the honing process takes place with a strop. Rehandling the axe happens by using wood grain to our advantage and using a handful of marking tricks so you can work quickly and efficiently in the handling process. Green wood carving is so much faster and more efficient when you've got a sharp axe, but you don't have to break the bank to get there. For these two hatchets, I have a grand total of $56 tools and supplies and the carving knife and sharpening setup will serve me for a whole lifetime of tool use. Citric acid is an incredibly cheap, effective rust removal tool, and restoring old axes and hatchets is a super fun way to get into a high end tool fairly cheaply.

I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable." I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break, and build the things I need. 8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool.
