Among the centuriesold cedars on the slopes of the CisBaikal Range, the most fullflowing river in Russia, the Lena, begins. Most of the year it is under ice. Only in April the river begins to revive. Ice drifts and spring floods on the Lena River are an impressive sight. There comes a time when huge masses of water reach the lower reaches in a single stream. Here the river is divided into many channels and branches, charging with its energy one of the largest river deltas in the world. One of the most famous and visited places in the Lena Delta is Stolb Island. This island is the highest point of the delta. Its height is 104 meters. It is here that the river is released from the rocky banks and spills in all directions over the tundra. Lena is divided into thousands of branches and channels, forming countless islands and lakes. Of all the numerous branches of the delta, only three main channels reach the ocean without interruption. These navigable arteries are huge rivers in themselves.
Summer comes to the delta in the second half of June. Myriads of birds, small and large, come to the delta to find a mate and breed their offspring.
