Spencerian Script is a uniquely American way of writing. Before the mid1800s, English script was the standard for letters and business correspondence in America. It was uniform, consistent, and had little freedom for expression.

In the early 1800s, a revolutionary new system of handwriting started to develop. Inspired by nature, a man named Platt Rogers Spencer began creating a system that allowed for individual expression through curvature, movement, variability and contrast.

Spencer’s system, or “Spencerian Script”, became the de facto standard for all written correspondence in America. It stood for the principles of independence and individuality that America was founded on. Despite being largely replaced by technology of the 20th century, the singular joy of writing in Spencerian, and the creative expression it allows, still endures.



Michael Sull is a master penman and one of the foremost living experts on Spencerian script in America. Recognized by the IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting) for his mastery at penmanship, he has been teaching for more than 30 years, and has helped to preserve the centuriesold craft of handwriting and calligraphy for future generations to come.

The Paper Seahorse is honored to bring Mr. Sull to the Tampa, Florida area for a special workshop series November 30th to December 2nd. One of the greatest living penmen will teach calligraphy, cursive, flourishing, and all things handwriting in an intimate and creative setting.
