Naena Falls is a beautiful 55m tall waterfall nestled in the mountains on the border between Niigata and Nagano Prefecture. This waterfall is famous for the thunderous roar of the water falling and echoing in the surrounding forest, giving it the nickname “Earthquake Waterfall”. Naena Falls is beautiful in any season, but I recommend either summer for the lush green forest and incredible volume of water due to the melting snow in surrounding mountains, or autumn for the stunning bright red and yellow foliage.

If you do come in summer, make sure to try the local specialty called nagashi somen, which literally translates to “flowing noodles”. A popular dish for cooling down in the summer, the goal is to catch noodles with your chopsticks that are sent flowing down a pipe in cold water. So it is not only refreshing, but fun too!

How to get to Naena Falls
Although it is in Niigata Prefecture, it is much closer to Nagano City, the capital of Nagano Prefecture. Catch the KitaShinano Line from Nagano Station direct until Myoko Kogen Station, then switch to a bus. Take the Suginosawa Line to Suginosawa Onsen then either change to the Myoko Sanroku Line until the final stop at the entrance of the waterfall, or walk that section in about 45 minutes.
