Magnetic gears use the magnetic force between sets of noncontact permanent magnets. Their noncontacting character eliminates the need for gear lubrication and the wear mechanisms related to mechanical contact. Magnetic gears have the significant potential to reduce the strong, tonal vibration and noise inherent in mechanical gears. Besides, since magnetic gears are based on the same physics and use the same materials and many of the same components, they can be easily integrated into electrical machines.
