My cat having a seizure

****February 2024 UPDATE:    • Pixel update (2024). Ashes is gettin ...

!!!!! ATTENTION VIEWERS !!!!!: Before you decide to comment by saying, "WHY ARE YOU JUST RECORDING HER!?! HELP HER, YOU JERK!" realize that I needed to record at least one seizure so I could show the vet and also get feedback from people online who might have a pet suffering from seizures as well. That probably won't stop many of you from making insensitive comments, though. Oh well. That's the internet for you.

If YOU have a pet with seizures, you would know very well that you can't just "wrap them in a blanket" or "hold them and soothe them" to make the seizures magically go away. Restraining her in ANY way will only cause more damage to her, and very likely myself. I just have to let the seizure run its course and do my best to make sure nothing sharp is nearby that could harm her if she runs into it. Sorry, but I cannot remove all the walls from my house, and I don't have the money or the time to make every surface padded for her safety.

My cat Pixel is not even a year old, and started having these horrible seizures. I had her for over 3 months and she never had a single seizure. She was always playful and very nocturnal. Then one day she was playing in her cat tower and started twitching and licking at the air with her tongue over and over. I was very confused and thought she just had a hairball or something...and then she fell out of her tower and started to spasm violently on the floor. I thought she was dying. It was terrible. She urinated all over herself and had a ton of froth around her mouth. After I cleaned her up she was back to normal like nothing happened. I called an emergency vet right away, but they said there's nothing they can do if her seizure stopped. They said if she had another and keeps seizing, I can rush her to an emergency clinic and they can give her a shot to stop the seizure, otherwise just make an appointment with a normal vet. So I did. And they couldn't prescribe her with any seizure medication unless she has two seizures within a 24 hour period. Well, she ended up having another the next day, so I ran her back to the vet, they did more bloodwork, and prescribed her with Phenobarb.

After all this madness, I asked the lady I got her from if she had any kind of traumatic history, because Pixel just randomly started having these horrible seizures. The woman I got her from said Pixel was thrown out of a truck when she was a tiny kitten and must have hit her head on the road, because she used to have seizures when she was super tiny and had vision problems, but then made a full recovery as she got bigger. This actually made me very mad....not only because the guy who threw kittens out of his truck was a total asshole...but also because she never told me this when I got her. This was all news to me. So I think as she is getting bigger, her skull is growing and her brain is still recovering from the damage done to her as a kitten. I have her on Phenobarb, but it doesn't seem to be doing much. The first month of Phenobarb made the seizures go away for almost a month, but she got super lethargic and was basically a zombie cat. The vet said I could cut the meds in half and she was back to her cute self, but started having seizures again. She still has a seizure almost every 3 days. I recently switched her from crushed pills to the liquid formula. She takes .5 ml (half a grain?) every 12 hours. It doesn't seem to have an effect. I think she needs brain surgery, or have the meds increased. My vet and I are taking small steps with med changes because we don't want to damage her liver. It's just a sucky situation overall.
