"Stealth and Strategy"
Four days and three herd management areas my friend Alice and I roamed ranges in Oregon's remote south east corner, also known as the Northern Great Basin. We encountered temperatures from morning frost and cold sleet, to blowing dust, heat, and sunburned skin... in one day. The temperatures often run in extremes out in the high desert region. Besides extremes in temperatures, we also ran into extremes in the tolerance of us by the mustangs all ranges from mild to wild. Often, I get the question of how close do wild horses let people get to the band or herd. Some bands who see bipods enough, typically tolerate us well enough... while some ignore and continue to graze, others will want to get too close and we have to shoo them away, raise our cameras/tripods, or kick a sagebrush. Then there are those bands, that if they see a dot with two legs among the sage all that is left is dust rising where they stood and vanish among the miles of sagebrush. Different bands and herds all require a different approach style. The wild bands, it's a lot of stealth & strategy... one misstep and miles of hiking they can blow out of there...
