Murcia is a large city in the southeastern part of Spain. It is located in a valley among mountain ranges, so the city is characterized by very hot summers and warm winters due to rather weak air circulation. For this reason, Murcia is called the “hot frying pan of Spain”.
The city located on the place of today Murcia many years ago was founded by the Emir of Cordoba Abd arRahman II in 825 under the name Medinat Mursiya.
One of the main attractions is the Cathedral de Santa Maria (Iglesia Catedral de Santa María en Murcia) made in the Spanish Gothic style. And the bell tower was built in the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles. The main facade, made in the 18th century, is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque.
Today Murcia is one of the largest student cities in Spain.
