After Mount St. Helens erupted, researchers had a blank slate from which to explore the science of ecological recovery. Scientist Charley Crisafulli was drawn to logcovered Spirit Lake, where nutrient rich waters fueled an unusually fast resurgence in fish, plant life and amphibians.
