More than meets the eye 👁️ - Kordin

At first glance it's just a road and industrial estate, however there are surprises in store if one digs deeper. The Corradino plateau has been inhabited since prehistory. At least five megalithic sites have been recorded of which only one survives (in ruins) to the present day, namely the Kordin III megalithic structure that sits adjacent to the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, that it predates by more than 5000 years. In 1756 during the reign of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca a polverista (gunpowder magazine) was built at Ras Ħanżir, overlooking the Grand Harbour. No other military installations were constructed on the plateau until the 1870's, when the British built the Corradino Lines to protect the dockyard extension at the French Creek that separates Corradino from Senglea. The Corradino Lines were linked to the Cottonera Lines at St. Paul Bastion. A naval prison was built within the Corradino Lines in 1886 that was transferred to the army in 1870 and became known as Corradino Military Prisons. This video starts from across Corradino Road at the Mediterranean Gardens, behind the presentday Corradino Correctional Facilities.
