Mini Pug: The Complete Breed Guide [4k Video]

If you ever see a Pug that looks like a puppy but is fully grown, you are more than likely looking at a Mini Pug; yes, there is such a thing! In the case of the Mini Pug, it’s definitely “good things come in small packages.”

However, typically a Mini Pug is a cross between a Pug and a Chihuahua and goes by the nickname of Chug.

It's also possible to create a Mini Pug by breeding tiny Pugs or litter runts. Breeding dogs like these carry genuine health risks for the dogs concerned.

What Are Miniature Pugs?

Miniature Pugs, as mentioned, are typically a cross between a Pug and a Chihuahua; however, the puppies generally take after their Pug parents, often with a slightly longer muzzle. Not being quite as brachycephalic as a full Pug is not a bad thing for the dog.

A Mini Pug will rarely weigh more than ten pounds, quite a bit less than your standard Pug, which can weigh as much as eighteen pounds.

What Are Pugs?

Pugs are a very old dog breed and can trace their lineage back thousands of years to ancient Tibet and China. They were initially bred as companions and lapdogs for Chinese royalty.

It’s said that no one was allowed to own Pugs except Chinese Emperors unless the dog was bestowed as a personal gift by the Emperor.

Today the Pug is sought after as a loving companion dog for families worldwide and is a hugely popular dog breed.

Mini Pug Appearance

Mini Pugs look much the same as a standard Pug; although, as mentioned, they can sometimes be slightly longer in the muzzle.

The Mini Pug has the typical larger than average round head and wrinkled brow. Their eyes bulge precisely the same as the larger version. Their coat will be short and a little rough when you run your hand down their body.

There’s minimal grooming necessary with a Mini Pug, although they will shed masses of hair precisely the same as the standard Pug.

The Pug facial wrinkles take a lot of care. They get moisture trapped in them, which leads to bacterial or fungal infections if not maintained thoroughly. They also produce a pungent odor which isn’t at all pleasant. So owners need to clean this area regularly.

Is A Mini Pug A Teacup Pug By Another Name?

Mini Pugs and Teacup Pugs are not the same. It’s typically accepted that a Mini Pug is the result of crossing a Pug with a Chihuahua. Teacups come from the Pug breeder crossing runts of standard Pug litters or breeding Pugs having the dwarfism gene.

While these babies are undeniably cute, this is a highly dubious and, I believe, unethical way to breed dogs.

There are inherent health risks in breeding dogs this way, and often these dogs grow to maturity with debilitating health conditions.

They grow to no more than five pounds, and in many cases, their life expectancy can be half that of a standard Pug.

Mini Pug Health Concerns

While it’s seen as healthier to cross a Chihuahua with a Pug than using litter runts to breed, there are some health concerns.

Mini Pugs and Brachycephaly

Standard Pugs are a brachycephalic dog breed, which means they have extremely short or snub faces. This issue poses breathing difficulties, and you can hear it for yourself when close to Pugs.

Crossing the Chihuahua does sometimes result in a slightly longer muzzle, but the dog is still brachycephalic.

Every dog needs to get some exercise, but in the case of the Mini Pug, exercising in hot weather can have severe implications because these dogs cannot regulate their temperature as they should.

The cute corkscrew Pug’s tail results from brachycephaly; the bones are not straight, causing the tail to twist. In some Pugs, it can be a very painful condition.

Mini Pugs Dental

Both Pugs and Chihuahuas have dental issues. There are far too many teeth for such small mouths, which causes teeth to overlap, sometimes leading to dental treatments necessary to ease the problem.

Final Thoughts

Both the Pug and Chihuahua are adorable tiny dogs, and crossing them doesn’t diminish that fact. As long as you are aware of some of the issues you’re likely to face, you’ll be getting a loving and adorable companion when you bring home a Mini Pug.
