Mele Aloha ‘Āina: Ku’u Home o Kahalu’u ft. Jerry Santos

Kani Nā Pua Ko‘olau at Hale A‘o with WCC music instructor/host Kamuela Kimokeo and one of Ko‘olaupoko‘s most treasured musicians, Jerry Santos. In this segment, Jerry Santos discusses the elements of mele aloha ‘āina (Hawaiian patriotic songs or songs which express the love for the land) as well as the inspiration behind one his most iconic compositions, “Ku‘u Home o Kahalu‘u.”

Kani Nā Pua Ko‘olau is a music event hosted at Windward Community College in Kāne‘ohe, O‘ahu which features notable musicians in a kanikapila style format (casual jam session), and encourages dialogue between the audience and the featured artist. Kani Nā Pua Ko‘olau is hosted by Windward CC music instructor, Kamuela Kimokeo who is the head of the WCC Hawai‘i Music Institute and has had the opportunity to play music with and mentored by many of Hawai‘i’s legends in Hawaiian music, including, Ledward Ka‘apana, Jerry Santos, Genoa Keawe, and Dennis Kamakahi. Kamuela is also a member of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano awardwinning group, Hi‘ikua.
