The Mekong Bobtail cat breed has deep roots across the Southeast Asia region, and you can happily find these felines prospering in countries including China, Iraq, Laos, and Vietnam. The Mekong Bobtail expanded into Russia during the 19th Century, where the breed was especially beloved by royalty.

The Mekong Bobtail was known as the Thai Bobtail and was a natural cat breed found in countries bordering the Mekong River. The Mekong Bobtail is named after the Mekong River. In the 19th century, the breed was imported to Russia, when the King of Siam, Chulalongkorn, gifted around 200 cats to the Emperor of Russia, Nicholas II. It was at this point that a more formal breeding program took place.

It’s thought that Mekong Bobtails were crossed with Siamese cats, as well as possibly other bobtail breeds, to create the type of cat we see today. Their similarity to Siamese cats is quite pronounced, thanks to their pointed coats and piercing blue eyes. There’s no confusion when they stand up and you see that distinctive pompom tail, though!

The bobtail is, of course, one of their defining characteristics. The breed standard states that the tail should consist of at least three vertebrae but must not be longer than a quarter of the cat’s body length. The tail can be kinked or curved

These days, you can find Mekong Bobtails in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. So make sure to consider adoption if you decide that this is the breed for you!

2. Mekong Bobtail's Size.

The Mekong Bobtail is a mediumsized cat. As is always the case, exact size standards might vary.

Most Mekong Bobtails weigh in at eight to ten pounds. That said, many can be smaller or larger than average.

The Mekong Bobtail is an exceptionally loyal breed of cat, renowned for the way they very quickly form loving and strong bonds with the humans in their lives. Don't be surprised if you notice that your Mekong Bobtail insists on following you around the house!

In fact, if your household is empty for long periods of the day, the breed might start to suffer from loneliness. This is definitely a feline who prospers in a busy home environment with a lot of action going on.

Mekong Bobtails also especially enjoy being around children, which helps, as they have a decent amount of energy and will need regular play sessions. The breed really enjoys climbing, so make sure you add a cat tree to your homestead and, ideally, provide safe furniture that can be successfully scaled by the cat.

4. Mekong Bobtail's Food and Diet Requirements.

Mekong Bobtails are a healthy and relatively lowmaintenance breed when it comes to their food. As long as you select a good quality cat food made with a high percentage of protein, they should thrive. Remember that settling into a new home can be a stressful time for kittens, so if you can keep them on the same brand of food that they were eating at the breeder’s, there’s less chance of them suffering an upset tummy from a sudden transition.

As Mekong Bobtails are more active than many breeds, you might find that you need to feed them more to keep up with their busy lives! Your veterinarian will be able to help to devise a feeding program that makes sure your cat gets exactly the right amount of food for their weight and activity levels.
