President Rodrigo Duterte, together with the Philippine delegation, was welcomed by more than 1,500 cheering Filipinos when he met the Filipino community in Thailand at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall in Bangkok to cap off his official visit in the country.

In his statement, the President declared that he is present on this day with them because of his love for the country.

”I will be loyal in my oath of office. I do not need the position at this time of my life. I must serve the Filipino people,” Duterte said.
He also told the crowd that the visit to Thailand completed his tour of the ASEAN member states in time for the Philippine hosting of this year’s 30th and 31st ASEAN Summits, and the ASEAN’s 50th founding anniversary.

Based on the record of the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, there are 16,743 Filipinos registered in Thailand as of December 2016. Majority of them are working as English teachers while others are in the hotel and entertainment industries, and in managerial positions. Lowskilled and household service workers make up only a small portion of registered Filipinos in Thailand.

In the last presidential elections, about 2,600 (73.35%) voted for President Duterte from the 3,550 who cast their ballots.
