Rotary dampers are special pieces of hardware that limit (or “dampen”) the speed of rotational motion. Think about being on an airplane and unlatching the tray in the seat back in front of you. That tray pivots about some rotational axis where it attaches to the seat. Does the tray crash down in an uncontrolled (and somewhat violent) manner? Or does it glide down smoothly and gracefully? Perhaps the answer to that question is dependent on whether the passenger is riding first class or coach, but if the tray does come crashing down, a rotary damper could resolve this and produce a slower, more controlled (and less violent) motion. Whether increasing rotational resistance from none to some, or from some to more, rotary dampers reduce rotational speed by applying rotational resistance.
