Measuring Your Dog: Fitting For Collars u0026 Harnesses

Measuring your dog is pretty simple, as long as you know where to start. Most often, there are 3 areas of the body and 23 on the neck, for which to take your dog’s measurements. The hard part is that every breed (and dog for that matter) has a unique frame, shape, and/or bone structure. Hence why harnesses, collars, muzzles, etc. are designed to be adjustable to some degree.

With measuring a harness, there are 3 areas of the body that will help with your decision on correct size to purchase. You first measure the "chest", which is determined by the area starting below the throat (in front of the dog's front legs) and around to the base of the neck, between his/her shoulder blades, and back around to the base of the throat (up from the front legs). You should then measure what we call the dog's "girth", which is the largest part of the chest, typically a few inches back from the dog's front legs and around their back, below the front shoulder blades. The last measurement is the area around the dog's "ribs" (or waist), just below their last rib, before it dips to the soft part of the of the belly.

Now measuring a dog's neck, although seemingly straightforward, can be a bit confusing. Depending on the purpose and function of the collar in question, you may be measuring the wrong area, and in turn, getting the wrong size collar. We recommend that you measure 23 areas around the neck; as the neck’s broad base (just above the shoulders) will be much wider than the measurement of the neck taken from just behind the dog's ears. Both may be equally important and useful, as we mentioned – for the type of collar you plan to use and in what way you plan to use it. Having 23 measurements from the start of the dog's neck, just behind the ears, and down to the base of the neck, will help when deciding on a specific collar and size.

Accuracy of your dog's measurements are of utmost importance, as it can make all the difference in comfort and safety out in the field. Not to mention, the time and convenience saved from returning or exchanging an order. ...
