Pictured in the video are the towns of Welch and Kimball in McDowell County, West Virginia.

Once heart of the nation's coal bin and home to some 100.000 residents, McDowell is now the third poorest county in the US, with only about 19.000 people living in it.
This video explores part of the area's complex history and the various challenges that McDowell's communities face.
