Welcome to our YouTube channel, where we delve into the world of practical DIY projects that stand the test of time! In this video, join us on a journey back to 2017 when we installed a pair of corner posts and gates. Unearthed footage showcases the success of the project seven years later, proving the effectiveness of our construction method. This stepbystep guide demonstrates how to construct gate posts or corner posts with precision and durability.

Key Steps and Tips:

Measure Twice, Install Once: Begin by purchasing your gate(s) and accurately measuring their width. This ensures precise positioning of your posts. An 8' gate may not actually be that width, as some manufacturers include the hinge in the measurement.

Choosing the Right Posts: Acquire a main post for gate hanging or corner placement and a brace post. For two gates meeting in the middle, you'll need a total of four posts; for a corner post, three will suffice.

Recycle and Reuse: Consider using discarded telephone poles for posts. Trim any rot at the top or bottom and cut them into equal lengths for added sustainability.

Digging Holes: Use a tractor threepoint auger to drill straight, level holes for the main posts. Fill the holes with dirt and tamp down firmly. Avoid using concrete, as it may accelerate post rot due to impervious surface runoff.

Horizontal Stabilization: Once the main and brace posts are secured, install smaller posts horizontally between them, about twothirds of the way to the top. This adds stability to the structure.

Notching and Connecting: Use a chainsaw to create flat notches in the main and brace posts for the connecting post. Secure a loop of wire from the top of the main gate post to the bottom of the brace post, tightening it with a pipe or small log. This connection ensures the posts can withstand the weight of gates or wire tension without pulling out of the ground.

Why Choose This Method:

Proven Durability: The success of our 2017 installation, revisited seven years later, demonstrates the longlasting durability of this construction method.

CostEffective: Utilizing recycled telephone poles not only promotes sustainability but also provides a costeffective solution for sturdy posts.

Simple and Effective Connection: The wire loop connection between main and brace posts ensures a solid foundation, preventing posts from shifting or leaning over time.

Avoiding Concrete for Longevity: Steering clear of concrete in the post holes reduces the risk of accelerated rot, particularly in areas with impervious surface runoff.
