Do you want to learn to learn English vowel sounds? Master English pronunciation? Do you know what a Diphthong is? They are English Vowel sounds but they are more difficult than the simple (LINK) short english vowel sounds or the simple LONG ENGLISH VOWEL SOUNDS (LINK). A diphthong is a sound made by combining two vowels, specifically when it starts as one vowel sound and goes to another, like the oy sound in oil.
Diphthong comes from the Greek word 'diphthongos' which means “having two sounds.”

Diphthongs can be tricky (difficult) sounds to master for nonnative speakers of English. Your mouth will move position as you produce the sounds. Many students find diphthongs difficult because producing them is a “motor skill” which has to be practiced again and again in order to get a good result. The main diphthong sounds in British English are:

When we move from one vowel sound to another this is called gliding, which is why another name for a diphthong is a, “gliding vowel” but they are also known as compound vowels, complex vowels, or moving vowels.
