The year is 1536 and we, along with King Henry VIII and his wife Jane Seymour, have traveled far to reach Revel Grove for their annual Harvest Festival.

Join us as we eat, drink, take in shows, and do a little shopping during the Renaissance Festival's pirate weekend. Maryland's Renaissance Festival is among the oldest and most revered in the entire country. While Ren Faire's started in Southern California, the Maryland festival is one of the first to be established outside of California and has operated since the mid 1970s.

The Faire is home to over 140 shops with artisans and craftspeople selling their wares to playtrons and visitors alike. What's a playtron? The RenFest community is welcoming to anyone who embraces the story and dresses in character. Since it was pirate weekend, Jon embodies his best Blackbeard and jumps into a pirate persona. Don't have a costume on hand? Don't worry! There are plenty of shops selling full costumes to masks and other adornments to help you get into the mood. We have to give a shout out to Mystical Masks’ Shane and Leah. They took us under their wings…or masks!…to talk through the storied history of the renaissance faire and how they have taken the art of Venetian mask making into the 21st century. And a visit to the Renaissance Festival isn't complete without food! We ate (and drank!) our way through the vendor stalls trying everything from the classic turkey leg to clam chower in a bread bowl, mashed potatoes, and a key lime pie on a stick. You can't beat food and for the most part, the prices were reasonable considering the portion sizes.

The shows and performances were out of this world. We went with a few recommendations from a master mask maker we met while shopping the Topsy Turvy Show and Journey to Venice are a must see at the faire. There is something for everyone and to spare you a 45 minute video we had to cut a few things but we loved the falconry show and there is a chance to meet the birds throughout the day. And if you are inspired to dance a jig or two, there is always music playing.
