As of the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; 772 drivers have started an F1 race. Amazingly, only five have ever had the honour of leading a lap on their debut. Two would be future world champions, another a race winner, and another a podium finisher. As for the fifth; he'd never be seen from in the Formula One paddock ever again.

This is the remarkable tale of Markus Winkelhock and the 2007 European Grand Prix. We'll explore his junior career, his F1 debut, and debate whether his astonishing feat was down to luck, skill, or something in between.
