It was in 1933 that the remains of the ancient royal capital were discovered by chance on Syrian soil, at the top of Tell Hariri, on the west bank of the Euphrates.

Since then, 70 years of archaeological research have profoundly renewed knowledge of the history of the Near East. The excavations notably revealed the ruins of a palace, the most grandiose in Mesopotamia. Despite the ravages of time, it is the only one to have preserved so many epigraphic and archaeological clues allowing us to reconstruct palatial life, at the time of the famous Hamourabi of Babylon, more than 4000 years ago.
