One day my son came up to me with some drawings and asked me if I could 3D print it for him. I had such a proud dad moment. Of course, I said yes. Then I asked if he would like to make a video 3D printing his design. That got him really excited. So then we started the project. He made some more drawings of his design, and he knew exactly what he wanted.
We both had a great time working on his design and filming. what a great excuse for quality time.
So I started out 3D modeling the design in Solidworks. since that's what I do for a living.
But then I remembered that maybe there would be an issue with the license. So I moved over to model the design in Fusion 360. There was a great moment when my son told me exactly how to work through Fusion 360, I tried to recreate that in the video but that didn't really work. It turned out great anyway.
Once I was done with the designing stage. the next step was to 3D print all of the parts. I like to design parts separately so the parts can move. Also, they can be different colors. I designed the parts in a way that they snap together with no glue.
There are a bunch of 3D printers at my disposal. So 3D printing the parts didn't take so long.
but finding more time to sit down and film some more took a while.
Revealing the ready product was a great moment. It's amazing to think that a 4yearold boy just designed his own toy. He planned all of the details and knew exactly what he wanted. He just delegated authority. Just like many designers today. My son reminded me daily to work on his toy design. When I told him what day we could continue filming, he actually woke me up at 5:30 in the morning, saying Dad get up! we're making a video!
I was both happy and annoyed, it was 5:30 after all. You probably already noticed that he's in his pajamas in the second half of the video. In conclusion, I would say this video should be encouraging for all children and parents. kids can design their own toys and parents can 3d print them. We are living in the future people!
