Making a NEW Cylinder Barrel for CAT D10 Dozer | Part 1 | Machining u0026 Welding

Follow
Cutting Edge Engineering Australia

This cylinder barrel has seen better days, it’s cracked and worn out, we need to make a new one! This is from the blade lift hydraulic cylinder off a Caterpillar D10 Dozer. The trunnion mounts are worn out and need to be reclaimed, we also found cracks around the trunnion that go all the way into the barrel plus the barrel end has had a failure and been incorrectly repaired. In this part 1 video we show the process of disassembling the barrel in the lathe by machining out the welds that hold the barrel end, trunnion and head flange to the barrel. We then attempt to remove the ends by heating to expand and shrinking the barrel with cold water. We also machine up the new stand offs and reclaim the trunnion mounts by welding and machining to suit the bearings. We also give the head flange and trunnion a sand blast so all our parts are ready to go on the new barrel. Stay tuned for Part 2!
