Tall Oregon Grape and Dull Oregon Grape are native to the West Coast of North America. An evergreen with spiky deep green leaves that turn reddish as they age, this workhorse provides food for humans, food for birds, food for pollinators, medicine, use as a hedge/security plant, habitat for native wildlife, and a noninvasive substitute for holly.
Mahonia contains Berberine, which is concentrated in its roots. This alkaloid is also abundant in goldenseal, a threatened woodland crop, overharvested for its medicinal berberine. Could Oregon grape become a more sustainable commercial crop for berberine?
